PALIN CONTROVERSY HIGHLIGHTS THE NEED FOR SENATE BILL 330

As the controversy expands around Sarah Palin’s six-figure speaking engagement at CSU Stanislaus, faculty members are calling for greater openness about how CSU auxiliary organizations spend their money.

It was revealed last week that the CSU Stanislaus Foundation would pay for Palin to speak at the campus’ 50th anniversary celebration in June. However, the contract between the former Alaska Governor and school remains hidden from public view.

Palin’s typical speaker fee is between $100,000 and $200,000, and on occasion more.

Situations like this are exactly the reason why the CFA is a sponsor of SB 330, a bill that would apply California’s public records laws to auxiliary organizations tied to our public higher education systems—in the UC and community colleges, as well as the CSU. State Senator Leland Yee is author of SB 330 and the California Newspaper Publishers Association is also a sponsor.
