Cindy Sheehan | Lost Causes Are the Only Causes Worth Fighting For

Cindy Sheehan, Truthout: "In the movie, 'Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,' at the end of a filibuster, idealistic freshman US Sen. Jeff Smith (played by Jimmy Stewart) reminds us that the struggle is what counts. 'Lost causes are the only causes worth fighting for,' he says. Just before collapsing on the Senate Floor, he croaks out, 'you fight for the lost causes even harder than the others - you even die for them.'"

Bill Moyers and Michael Winship | What Are We Bid for American Justice?

Bill Moyers and Michael Winship, Truthout: "That famous definition of a cynic as someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing has come to define this present moment of American politics. No wonder people have lost faith in politicians, in parties and in our leadership. The power of money drives cynicism deep into the heart of every level of government."

Quote of the Day

NBC isn’t the network that is bringing Americans the Olympics. It’s the network that’s preventing us from watching them — from really participating in this two-week period of international goodwill and athletic exhibition that happens only every four years.

10 Reason NBC is Messing Up on Olympic Coverage

10 Reasons Why NBC Should Lose Its Olympic Broadcast Rights; Or “How I Learned To Hate The Coolest Sporting Event In The World”

NBC has really managed to make a mess of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics — even more than usual. I love the Olympics and am saddened that NBC has made them so painfully unwatchable, even for me:

I am damn good at what I do for our kids, yet there is no $$ for me to teach them

Shame piled upon shame! 1000 times shame on the once Great State of California and the CSU Administration!

All I want to be able to do is teach, at very least, one Learning Skills class a semester, without being a burden on the department. This type of program, over 40 years ago at Oregon State University, I would not be here now. It gave me a leg up, it got me engaged and I learned what it was to be a college student.

The Department of Learning Skills are the most dedicated and wonderful people on the campus. They deserve to be supported, encouraged and funded. Nor should they be penalized for collaborating with faculty across campus.

I adore these kids, they are our future. All I ask is that I be allowed to pay if forward. It is wrong to cut this program, it is wrong to not facilitate and enable the best for our kids.

Shame!

E.J. Dionne Jr. | Why the Democrats Are Losing

E.J. Dionne Jr., Op-Ed: "If you want to be honest, face these facts: At this moment, President Obama is losing, Democrats are losing and liberals are losing.... Who's winning? Republicans, conservatives, the practitioners of obstruction and the Tea Party."

From SLOG: Amazon's Grip on the Ebook Market

Posted by Paul Constant on Wed, Feb 17, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Right now, Amazon pretty much owns the ebook market—90% of all ebooks sales are from Amazon. A Credit Suisse analyst has predicted that their market share will dip to somewhere around 35% in the next five years. Some news sources have been spinning this as trouble for Amazon.

I don't know why this is news; right now Amazon is the only major ebook retailer, and two major forces (if you haven't been paying attention: Apple and Google) are about to get involved in the market. Sarah Weinman at Daily Finance has some very good analysis of why Amazon should remain strong even as their market share slips, but the basic point is this: A shrinking share of a rapidly-growing market is still good news. Don't worry about Amazon; I think they'll continue to do just fine.

Cheney Admits to War Crimes, Media Yawns, Obama Turns the Other Cheek

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Dick Cheney is a sadist. On Sunday, in an exclusive interview with Jonathan Karl of ABC News' "This Week," Cheney proclaimed his love of torture, derided the Obama administration for outlawing the practice, and admitted that the Bush administration ordered Justice Department attorneys to fix the law around his policies."

"When I talk to people who believe in this global warming crap… it's fake science. They may have educations and degrees that say they are scientists, but they're not. They're political hacks and leftists."

UCS Factcheck:
The overwhelming consensus of more than 1,250 authors and 2,000 scientific expert reviewers from the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, as well as 18 American scientific associations, is that global warming is observably happening and a growing threat to our world.
