THE STATE BUDGET AND THE CSU

STUDENT NEWSPAPERS OPPOSE BUDGET CUTS

Outrage continues to grow as a result of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed budget cuts to the CSU.

Student newspapers throughout the system have taken up pens against the governor’s cuts by producing an onslaught of articles and editorials on the subject.

The CSU East Bay Pioneer published an editorial stating: “We hope that these budget cuts don’t interfere with faculty compensation, especially after faculty members fought so hard to get the compensation they deserve.”

The editorial can be viewed in its entirety at: https://webmail.saclink.csus.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=36e1bf7e907849719553bf3234f8131d&URL=http%3a%2f%2fpioneer.csueastbay.edu%2fPioneerWeb%2fPioneerNews1-24-08%2fPioneerFrame1-24-08.html

The San Jose Spartan Daily wrote: “It makes absolutely no sense to cut back budgets on things that are important to our state, especially education.”

The Long Beach Daily 49er took it a step further by dubbing the governor as an “Educ-Hater” and editorializing that: “These budget assaults on education are contradictory to (the governor’s) 2003 and 2006 campaign promises.”

· SEND A LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Letters to the editor play an important role in CFA’s efforts to advocate for higher education. By sending a letter you can help assignment editors know that you – the reader, viewer or listener – are interested in a particular topic and encourage the media outlet to continue to report on that topic.

Sending a letter is an easy and effective way to support higher education! Following last week’s call for letters, the San Jose Mercury News published letters from San Jose Lecturers Representative Jonathan Karpf as well as San Jose Professor Emeritus Dave Elliot.

Following their example, CFA asks faculty members from other parts of the state to write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper today and let them know the importance of higher education funding to the future of our state.

Their letters can be viewed at: https://webmail.saclink.csus.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=36e1bf7e907849719553bf3234f8131d&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.mercurynews.com%2fletters%2fci_8052140
