Nepali Amigos

Shashi-ji and from Fresno in front of the Mon Tree @ the Capitol

Sutter's Fort

Milton, Shashi and I on the porch of the Ponderosa. Shashi was my host in Nepal, and is working on a masters at the Univ. of Wyoming. He was in Fresno with his colleague who just got a job at CSU-Fresno. They came up for the day, and we all went to the Kathmandu Kitchen restaurant. It was great having them tell us what was what on the menu.

Republican Gomorrah

"Many of the [right wing] movement's leading figures are united by more than political campaigns; they are bound together by a shared sensibility rooted in private trauma. Their lives have been stained by crisis and scandal -- depression, mental illness, extra-marital affairs, struggles with homosexual urges, attraction to drugs and pornography, serial domestic abuse, and even murder."

BuzzFlash.com's Review (excerpt)
This is an explosive book that gets to the heart of the winger psychoses. Max Blumenthal sees the inner truth that "many of the [right wing] movement's leading figures are united by more than political campaigns; they are bound together by a shared sensibility rooted in private trauma. Their lives have been stained by crisis and scandal -- depression, mental illness, extra-marital affairs, struggles with homosexual urges, attraction to drugs and pornography, serial domestic abuse, and even murder."

And that's for starters.

"Inspired by the work of psychologist Erich Fromm, who analyzed how the fear of freedom propels anxiety-ridden people into authoritarian settings, Blumenthal explains in a compelling narrative how a culture of personal crisis has defined the radical right."

At BuzzFlash, we are a bit proud of Max, because when he was starting out, he was a night editor for us. Since then, he's gone onto distinguish himself as a journalist who regularly exposes the dark inner psychoses of the right wing in both print and video.

"Republican Gomorrah" is a 365-page exposé into the ironic fact that those who wrap themselves in the flag fear freedom the most because of their own personal demons and insecurities, making them pathologically supportive of an authoritarian state that can provide them with the emotional security of being a cog in a machine of a white Christian hierarchical machine.

This is a fascinating, incisive and groundbreaking book that explores the needy and fractured psyhological drive that propels so many wingers into a sort of mad need for tyranny, while claiming they are defending freedom.

It's an irony that could prove fatal to America, if we don't understand it as Max Blumenthal has revealed it.

"With scarcely more than a pith helmet, a notebook, and a tattered copy of Escape from Freedom, Erich Fromm’s great study of authoritarian psychology, the dauntless Max Blumenthal set forth years ago to explore the dank forests of American Christianism. Now he has returned to civilization, bringing back a fine collection of shrunken heads and a riveting account of a religio-political subculture that’s even weirder than you thought it was. Republican Gomorrah is an irresistable combination of anthropology and psychopathology that exerts the queasy fascination of (let’s face it) something very like pornography."

—Hendrik Hertzberg, The New Yorker

“A brave and resourceful reporter adept at turning over rocks that public-relations-savvy Christian conservative leaders would prefer remain undisturbed.”
—Rick Perlstein, New York Times Book Review

“Max Blumenthal’s bold and brash reporting style should not overshadow his keen understanding of the extremist ideology that passes for “conservatism” in America today. A witty writer who thinks for himself, he shows the mainstream media where the story is, not vice versa. And his short videos have transformed the conservative crack-up into must-see TV.”

Wise Latina Confirmed

Sonia Sotomayor was confirmed as the next Supreme Court Justice today in a partisan vote of 68-31. All Democrats approved, as well as nine Republicans. Sen. Ted Kennedy was too ill to be in the chamber. The GOP's ugly smear campaign against Sotomayor may have repercussions in the next election.

From the moment Mr. Obama chose her in May, many political strategists warned Republicans that opposing the first Latina nominated to the Supreme Court would jeopardize the party in future elections. In the waning days of the debate, some Democrats sought to portray Republican opposition as a grave insult to Latinos. “Republicans will pay a price for saying ‘no’ to this judge,” Senator Robert Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey, said in Spanish at a news conference Wednesday.

What are you doing to conserve water?

What are you doing to conserve water?

Seawater covers 71 percent of the planet. Fresh water is a much more precious commodity. So, a Brazilian environmental group has come up with a novel proposal for conserving clean water.

SOS Mata Atlantica says Brazilian households can save more than a thousand gallons of water a year by cutting back on one toilet flush a day. The group isn’t exactly urging people to hold it in. It’s suggesting instead that people relieve themselves in the shower.

They’re not kidding around… this TV ad below shows the Statue of Liberty, Gandhi, basketball players and all sorts of cartoon characters piddling in the shower. They deliver the message that urinating in the shower is harmless and keeps fresh water from being flushed down the toilet.

So, what are you doing to conserve water?

Low flow toilets?
Fewer car washes?
or maybe showering with friend?

Brazil forest group: Go green _ go in the shower

RIO DE JANEIRO — New TV ads are encouraging Brazilians to save water — by urinating in the shower. Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica says the campaign, running on several television stations, uses humor to persuade people to reduce flushes. The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 liters (1,157 gallons) of water annually.

SOS spokeswoman Adriana Kfouri said Tuesday that the ad is "a way to be playful about a serious subject."

The spot features cartoon drawings of people from all walks of life — a trapeze artist, a basketball player, even an alien — urinating in the shower.

Narrated by children's voices, the ad ends with: "Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!"

The threat to democracy is still very real, in particular because the corporate media is biased against governmental intervention. Obama may have won at the polls, but the media -- owned by large Wall Street Corporations -- is framing the radical redistribution of money to the wealthy and the Wall Street gambling crooks as an issue of "free markets" vs. "socialism."

What that translates to, in reality, is no risk super-wealth for a few, with welfare paid to them if they lose any of their millions -- or in the case of the financial "titans," billions of dollars.

What we have in the corporate media is a "frame" -- as George Lakoff calls it --of "free market" bias, when what they mean is "free market" losses and risk for the middle class and poor, and no-risk fixed-market welfare subsidies for the rich to subsidize their gambling debts with our economy.

Glenn Beck was recently talking about a new Civil War on cable television.

After all, the big media is owned by big corporations -- and they still think that, for the most part, an unregulated free market is part of the solution, because they are big players in that disastrous Wall Street casino. Of course, this mythical "free market" is just -- for the most part -- a bunch of river boat gamblers who have crashed our ship of state into a bridge and blame the governnment for building the bridge in the first place, as we all sink to the bottom.

That is why on cable television opponents of the "recovery" act vastly outnumbered proponents leading up to the compromise bill. That is why so few economists were featured on television news -- or on the radio -- because proponents of government economic intervention far outnumber opponents.

BuzzFlash started on May 11th of 2000 out of sheer disgust with the corporate media's biased news coverage. Like MoveOn.org (which took the advocacy road, while BuzzFlash took the news and commentary road), we were mad as Hell that even the Washington Post and New York Times -- alleged "liberal" outlets -- egged on the Clinton impeachment in their news sections, posting leaks from Ken Starr's "hit squad" as fact, and blowing a mountain out of a mole hill. Meanwhile, both papers sat down like doormats -- with some minor exceptions -- for the Bush/Cheney administration years of illegal behavior, war and torture.

For now, we ask you to financially support BuzzFlash.com and help us achieve our goals of survival and even expanding our reporting staff. It's a constant struggle in a recession.

Suffice it to say that BuzzFlash has been a proven progressive pro-democracy altenative media source -- and a unique model of journalism that can't be bought.

We are not financed by corporate advertising -- such as sites and television stations that include hundreds of millions of dollars in "greenwashing" ads that make oil companies look like saviors of the environment or ads to sign up for Ann Coulter's website. We are not financed by subscriptions, which would exclude those unable to pay.

We are reader-financed, so we are responsible only to you. We don't have to worry that if we criticize an industry or individual that they might cut off their lucrative funding (not that we ever have to worry about the adjective "lucrative" at BuzzFlash.)

BuzzFlash is at a particularly vulnerable point because we are growing our original commentary and staff and putting ourselves out on a financial limb in a recession, without any outside capitalization.

Owning a piece of the media is the ultimate missing link in restoring democracy and creating a government not run by corporations, but one of the people, by the people and for the people.

Yes, it would be easier to run advertising -- and we are not naive enough to think that advertising won't continue to pay for most of America's media -- but isn't there room for at least one alternative that is responsible only to its readership?

For nine years on May 11th, the answer has been "yes" for BuzzFlash because of you. We run lean, but we have been online everyday -- yes, everyday 24/7 -- since May of 2000.

Keep the dream alive. Help us survive and grow. You can continue to be part of this great alternative model of media ownership.

We need your support today -- and in the future.

Because you are our "sustainable fuel." And if you choose to buy a premium, you are helping also fulfill our mission of supporting progressive products, Fair Trade, and a liberal economy.

How you choose to use your dollars -- if you have any spare ones given the hard times -- can change the direction of our society.
