· march 4 protests put education cuts in the national spotlight

The March 4 actions that took place on or near college campuses across California have captured the imagination of the entire nation.

“It is clear that the events of March 4 have captured the imagination of the news media and public,” said CFA President Lillian Taiz, a professor of History at CSU Los Angeles.

Taiz continued, “The March 4th protests were historic and show not only that we care very deeply about the future of our schools and colleges, but that tens of thousands of us are willing to do something about it.”

· WHAT’S NEXT

With March 4 now in the rearview mirror, faculty, students and education supporters plan more action to ensure that lawmakers and university administrators remain accountable for properly funding public education.

While many plans are still percolating among the thousands of March 4 participants, here are some of the ways already in the works through which you can keep the March 4 momentum going:

· On March 5, the California Federation of Teachers (CFT) and a diverse coalition of labor, business, education, and faith groups embarked on a 48-day “March for California’s Future.”

The marchers are bringing more attention to the crisis in public education as they move north from Bakersfield up the Central Valley – stopping at CSU Fresno and CSU Sacramento – toward an April 21 convergence on the State Capitol. You can follow the “March for California’s Future” and learn more at: http://www.fight4cafuture.com

· Participate in CFA’s district or capitol lobby days. Now that the March 4 events have captured the attention of state lawmakers, it is important to follow up with them and reiterate the importance of funding for the CSU.

These visits also serve as an opportunity to promote CFA-sponsored legislation.

To learn more about participating in CFA Lobby Days, contact your campus political action chair or send an email to Deputy Political Director Erin Hicks: ehicks@calfac.org

· Students from the CSU and California Community Colleges will rally together on March 22 in front of the State Capitol. Faculty members are invited to this annual march where thousands are expected. The march begins at Raley Field in West Sacramento and concludes with a rally on the North Steps of the State Capitol.
