ViaCFA: ‘CALIFORNIA JOBS BUDGET’ WOULD RESTORE CSU FUNDING, SAVE VITAL SERVICES

Last week, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez unveiled a comprehensive budget plan called the “California Jobs Budget,” which would restore $365 million in funding to the CSU while avoiding draconian cuts to basic state services and critical safety net programs.

Speaker Pérez’ proposal would finance the budget by implementing an oil severance fee and securitizing the state’s huge recycling fund.

The CFA Board of Directors voted last weekend to support the “California Jobs Budget.”

“CFA does not accept the false choice that pits public higher education against social services,” said CFA President Lillian Taiz, a professor of history at CSU Los Angeles. “This budget is a huge step in the right direction and deserves our support.”

“Our organization is ready to work for the Speaker’s budget proposal and the governor’s recommendation to fund the CSU. It won’t be easy but we know it’s the right thing to do for our members and for California’s future.”

In the coming days, CFA will ask faculty, students, staff and other education supporters to send messages to the legislature urging adoption of the “California Jobs Budget.”
