Daniel,

Riddle: If you're a new Republican Congressman who campaigned on a promise to repeal health care reform, what is the first thing you do when you get to Washington?

Punchline: You demand that the government give you your taxpayer-subsidized health care faster!

Pretty funny. But Andy Harris wasn't kidding. Harris is a brand new Republican Congressman from Maryland who argued on the campaign trail that the public option was tantamount to socialized medicine.

Then - after he won by playing on fears - he stood up during a congressional freshman seminar and expressed outraged that his health coverage kicked in 28 days after his official Jan. 3rd swearing-in date.

I guess he doesn't see the irony in this. While he works to deny health care to millions of Americans, he's livid at the thought of not having it himself - even for just one month.

This isn't an abstract discussion about the size of government. People are dying because they can't afford to see a doctor. That's why we reformed health care in the first place. But people like Andy Harris just don't seem to get it. If he thinks he's vulnerable because he'll go one month without health care, what does he think about the people who have had to go a year without it? Or a lifetime because of a pre-existing condition?

If they really want to repeal health care reform, they need to lead by example. These new members should show the millions of out-of-work Americans that they can go without insurance as well - or stop trying to deny Americans access to the same kind of quality, affordable health care they will soon enjoy.

Thanks,
Jeremy
