One Point for Jung: Its a Mall World!

As anyone who knows me knows, I absolutely HATE, DESTEST and I avoid shopping malls if I can. I like walking down real streets, and walking into real stores, and talk to real people, that do not look like they stepped out of a Disney film.

So it was strange as last night I had a some odd dreams, of meeting colleagues in a shopping mall, and the conversation (in the dream in Portuguese... yay!) all revolved around how there was a new mall opening and that we all had to go there (me trying not to be too zangado - annoying and grumpy -  glumly dragged along to see it). So it came to a surprise that as part of my Saturday morning ritual to lay in bed late and listen to public radio from the states on my tablet the first thing  heard when I tuned in was this and to my great surprise this was the first thing that I heard on WNYC:

Since we were awoken by a pounding rainstorm (pancada), so it was especially fine to sleep in, listening to radio as the rain pounded outside.

"Such fundamental changes would require a radical change in priorities, from spending $300 to $400 billion a year for the military, to using this wealth to improve the living conditions of Americans and people in other parts of the world. For instance, it was estimated by the World Health Organization that a small portion of the American military budget, if given to the treatment of tuberculosis in the world, could save millions of lives.
The Unites States, by such a drastic change in its policies, would no longer be a military superpower, but it could be a humanitarian superpower, using its wealth to help people in need."

A LONG List Of President Obama’s Accomplishments (With Citations)

Author: February 15, 2013 12:07 amIf you’re one of those folks who thinks President Obama is a “disappointment,” you haven’t been paying attention the last few years. And those of you who try to draw comparisons with the Bush Administration should put away the hallucinogens and have your memory checked.  If you were in a coma for the eight Bush Years, I apologize and forgive you. But please join the real world. So far, this president has done most of what he said he would do if elected; imagine what he could have done by now if progressives had supported him and not given him a Congress that doesn’t look at him as if he’s the demon seed.

Not only is he NOT a “disappointment,” he’s pretty much the opposite. And no, I don’t just say that because he took out Osama bin Laden, helped Libya determine their own destiny for the first time in a while, and because he seems able to handle international incidents without starting a new war. The guy does nearly everything we elect a president to do, and he doesn’t brag about it constantly.

Is he perfect? No, he’s human. Does he deserve some criticism? I suppose, but I must admit I haven’t seen any complaints that were of based on anything having to do with the real world. One I can’t forgive him for is pulling Janet Napolitano out of Arizona. But the thing is, on balance, he’s mostly stellar. Besides, criticism about certain specific problems is one thing; taking on an overall “Obama sucks” meme not only has the potential to put Willard Romney into power, it’s also a lie. Just because you wanted a president who would give you a glitter-farting unicorn and didn’t quite get that doesn’t mean he’s not doing well at the job we hired him for.

What follows is a PARTIAL list of Obama’s accomplishments so far. Unlike many such lists, there is a link to a citation supporting every single one.

Legislative Prowess
Despite the characterizations of some, Obama’s success rate in winning congressional votes on issues was an unprecedented 96.7% for his first year in office.  Though he is often cited as superior to Obama, President Lyndon Johnson’s success rate in 1965 was only 93%.   http://n.pr/i3d7cY

JUST *ONE* EXAMPLE OF GROSS GOVERNMENT WASTE
October 7th, 2013:
"The first twelve C-27Js have been taken out of service and shipped to the boneyard at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. Even more C-27Js are set to be delivered to the Air Force only to be sent immediately to the boneyard.
This comes at an especially sensitive time with the government in the second week of the shutdown that occurred Oct. 1 after Congress failed to agree to a budget or continuing resolution for fiscal year 2014.
The Air Force spent about $1.6 billion to purchase the 21 aircraft. Soon after the first C-27Js arrived in Afghanistan in 2011 to start resupplying deployed Army units, the Air Force said it could no longer afford the luxury of the aircraft.
The C-27J found itself in the middle of the debate between the Air Force active duty and the Air National Guard. Guard officials said the Air Force leadership was unfairly hacking away at the Guard’s budget in order to save the active duty. The C-27J fleet was a shining example the Guard used.
Air Force leaders justified scrapping the C-27J saying the C-130 could complete most of the missions, and it could do it cheaper."

Via JMG: JFK And The Roots Of The Tea Party - This is Terrifying BTW!

"The president is a socialist. He is neutering the United States on the world stage. He is spending us into bankruptcy. He is hellbent on expanding national health care, which will surely lead to government death panels. He is advancing big-government agendas everywhere from Main Street to Wall Street. And do we really know the truth about his personal history and religion? Perhaps the man in the Oval Office should be impeached — even tried for treason.

"If today’s extremist rhetoric sounds familiar, that’s because it is eerily, poignantly similar to the vitriol aimed squarely at John F. Kennedy during his presidency. And just like today, Texans were leading what some of them saw as a moral crusade. To find the very roots of the tea party of 2013, just go back to downtown Dallas in 1963, back to the months and weeks leading to the Kennedy assassination. It was where and when a deeply angry political polarization, driven by a band of zealots, burst wide open in America.

"It was fueled then, as now, by billionaires opposed to federal oversight, rabid media, Bible-thumping preachers and extremist lawmakers who had moved far from their political peers. In 1963, that strident minority hijacked the civic dialogue and brewed the boiling, toxic environment waiting for Kennedy the day he died." - Bill Minutaglio, writing for the Washington Post.
