Hello from Teite

Milton & I are taking a few minutes before we catch the bus to Amparo to "weed" our email. I have another wave of tremendous offers for free money from Nigeria... and soemone hacked a collegue´s email in Nepal and sent a very convincing plea for help. He assured me that he wasn´t in Nigeria.

We had a grand day yesterday. Took the metro to the Praça de Se. When we took the escalator up, I was talking to M about why Michael Jackson is so important, and lo and behold there was a small group of people practicing Thriller (the song is stuck in my head). The teacher was a very convincing Michael (very good, Brazilian moon walk and all) and the students were some girls with learning problems... they drew a big corowd, and it was really great.

We went into the Cathedral, then walked down to the Pateo do Colegio, where São Paulo in all its grandure began in 1554... its very much like if one of the California Missions was picked up and set right in the middle of Manhattan. We walked up into the financial district, M took a pic of me at BOVESPA (the stock exchange) then we took a ride up the Torre de BOVESPA. AMazing view ofthe city. After that we went to the Mercadão for lunch... really fun... Got a taxi and went to Estação do Luz and the Pinocoteca. After that we went back to the hotel (which by the way is not our favorite haunt (Dona Zilha) but a rather horrid affair that we will never return to, despite its very handy location. About 730, we walked down to Ubi´s house to have dinner with his wife, his son and daughter, Sonia and Maria do Carmo. We had a grand evening. Milton, Sonia, Do Carmo, Ubi and myself are all ethnomathematicians (Ubi of course invented the field) so we always havea grand time. Every one here is so proud of Milton for the hard work he is doing with his doctirate... me too!

Lif is good. I will begin posting pics tonight when we get home... a vida e maravihosa!
