Here are the 4 ways Trump violated the United Nations Charter when he spoke today at the U.N. General Assembly.

The U.S. President brazenly violated multiple Articles as he threatened violence against countries like Iran and Cuba, and bragged about attacks on Venezuela and boats in the Caribbean.

1.

Trump said: “Do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?”

U.N. Charter: “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state” [Article 2(4)] This statement also violates Article 2(3) on peaceful settlement of disputes, and Article 1(1) on the purpose of the UN to maintain international peace.

Trump said: “My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba... It's failing like never before, and it will fall.”

U.N. Charter: "The Purposes of the United Nations are to develop friendly relations among nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples” [Article 1(2)] This statement also violates Article 2(1) on sovereign equality of all members; Article 2(4) which prohibits the use of threat and force, as well as the principle of non-intervention.

Trump said: “I designated the drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and unleashed the United States Armed Forces to eliminate them. The cartels are the ISIS of the Western Hemisphere... They should be killed, exiled, or detained as enemy combatants without the possibility of release... The United States has carried out dozens of strikes on cartel drug boats.”

U.N. Charter: “All Members shall settle their international disputes by peaceful means in such a manner that international peace and security, and justice, are not endangered.” [Article 2(3)]

Trump said: “The United States military conducted a massive military operation penetrating deep into the Venezuelan capital... Last month, we signed the largest oil deal in history, covering 65 billion barrels of oil... It was a war, but it's perhaps the biggest deal ever made.

U.N. Charter: “The Organization is based on the principle of the sovereign equality of all its Members” [Article 2(1)] This statement also violates Article 2(4) which prohibits the use of threat and force, as well as the principle of non-intervention.
